This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students attend an urban, public school in Milwaukee, WI and have chosen to take an Advanced Placement course to help better prepare them for college-level classes.
My students are intelligent, energetic, and passionate about their education.
They strive to push their learning to new levels in a quest to make connections between themselves and the world. By expanding their knowledge, they hope to impact their school and communities in positive ways. Having access to high-level texts will help them develop their critical thinking skills and lead them into conversations about the human condition.
My Project
In an English classroom, students are forced to read texts that they might not enjoy. This includes stopping and analyzing, writing about the texts, and other activities that help the student become a better reader.
Even though a student might be on their way to becoming a better reader in the classroom, they might not actually enjoy reading.
I hope that with my project, students will leave the classroom with a want to read on their own, and not just books of academia. I want students to use these books to find books that they enjoy, and want to read for their own pleasure.
