My Students

I teach Kindergarten at a wonderful school. I love to teach reading. I want to instill a love of reading in my students. I believe that teaching children to read at a young age is vital. It is the most important tool for them to learn as a foundation for success later in life.

My kindergarten class consists of 21 five and six year old boys and girls.

I teach at a wonderful school but it is located in an area of high poverty. I feel that my students do not have the same opportunities as children that live in other school districts because of the high level of poverty. I believe it is my job to overcome and be creative and provide as many opportunities to my students that I can. Most my students' parents work constantly and are unable to provide things for them besides food and clothing. The majority of my students are not reading yet and are just learning the basic skills to begin reading. Many of them have not been exposed to books, computers, and even preschool schools to give them a foundation to build on when they enter kindergarten.

My Project

A listening center would provide a way for my students to have extra time listening books and to be able to hold the books themselves like independent readers. It also provides for them to be able to hear someone besides the teacher. They learn to hold the book correctly while looking through it, and they are also listening to someone read to them. These skills are very important in teaching children to read. Listening to books also provides a way to build my students vocabulary and speaking skills. Several of my students are speech delayed and being able to listen to books provides a way for them to hear words spoken correctly and to broaden their vocabulary. My job is not just about teaching children to read. I want to instill a love of reading in my students that will last a lifetime.

The listening center in my classroom is broken and out of date.

I believe that adding a listening center to the reading instruction and activities that I do on a daily basis will allow my students to understand reading concepts better and to develop speaking and vocabulary skills. I believe that teaching a child to read is the most important thing I can do as a teacher. When a child is able to read well, they have a better chance of being successful later in life.
