Learning to Read, and Loving It: The Witches

My students need class sets of novels. We often study novels together and having a copy of the book for each student keeps all of my readers more engaged and interested.

My Students

I have a wonderful group of students who work really hard. We are very busy working on studying comprehension strategies, comprehension skills, vocabulary strategies, and studying many different genres of literature. Studying an assortment of novels helps us practice and perfect our new skills.

Our elementary school is nestled in the foothills in Northern Utah.

My students are very hard working and dedicated. My class really enjoys studying many different types of literature together. We love sitting down with a good book, and being able to discuss it together. We put into practice all of the comprehension skills that we spend time learning and we are able to fully engage in some amazing stories.

My Project

For a small part of each day, we will each sit down with a copy of the novel, and read together. We stop to discuss, we practice our comprehension skills, make notes about the genre, and note details about the characters. We make predictions, clarify what we have read, work on our phonics and decoding skills, ask questions, and evaluate the author's work. We focus on re-reading to capture details, and we discuss what kind of people the characters are. Students learn to fully understand what they are reading, and begin to think more deeply about the stories. Additionally, students who are not particularly interested in reading learn to appreciate a good book.

By using comprehension skills and strategies to more fully engage in a book, students will be developing important life skills.

They will learn to apply the same strategies to more technical reading, perhaps in their future careers. They will learn to enjoy reading, and they will learn a lot from the stories and the characters within each novel.
