Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our student body is made up of over 95% hispanic and low-socioeconomic students. Most of our students are bilingual in speaking, but not in reading. Many of our students do not have access to books outside of school. They are just learning what books are and how to enjoy them. They come to school eager to learn and to the library wanting to read and take books home to share with their family.
My students are enthusiastic and blossoming readers!
They visit the library looking to find new books that meet current interests. My goal, as their librarian, is create a love for fiction and non-fiction books equally.
My Project
The books requested will provide grade level appropriate beginning readers for our Pre-K through 2nd grade readers. I have chosen beginning chapter books and easy readers in the format and size of chapter books. The list contains both fiction and non-fiction texts to allow students to read for 'fun' and for 'learning' facts.
Books that "look like" chapter books are highly desired by our kids, so beginning chapter books are awesome!
If it makes them want to read, then I will order whatever it takes. The books ordered also comply with Ren Learning's Accelerated Reading program.
Developing reading skills is important for growth and achievment, but students must also learn to love reading. Having access to interesting books will provide those learning opportunities!
