Learning to Love Reading

My students need high interest novels! So many of my students do not read at home because they do not have anything they want or enjoy reading.

My Students

I have recently begun teaching at a brand new school in NYC. Everything is brand new and beautiful, but one thing I could really use are high interest books my students could read during their independent reading time. The materials we currently have are not engaging the students.

My students are super excited about starting middle school in a brand new building.

They are motivated and want to learn, but are lacking the resources they need to be as successful as they could be. Out of 132 students, over 100 scored a level 1 on the NYS ELA exam in 2015. They are struggling with reading, in particular, independent reading. They are great when we do guided reading, but on the test, and in life, they are not going to have a teacher reading to them. They must be able to read independently. Realistically, the materials provided through our curriculum are not on my students' levels and do not engage students. I need books that my students are able to read by themselves and that they enjoy reading. In addition, I work in a Title I school where families are unable to provide their children with books due to lack of funds or just lack of knowledge. I feel it is my role as a teacher to provide them with the resources they need to be successful students.

My Project

Getting students to read at home is a daunting task; either students do not have books at home, or they do not possess a library card, or haven't found a book they love- so they just do not read on their own. It's my goal this year to devote time in class to independent reading so that each student can develop and strengthen their independent reading skills. In order to do this, I need to provide students with books that are age, level, and interest appropriate. It's my hope that by providing students with books they are interested in, they will begin to love reading and not see it as such an arduous task. I hope that independent reading time in class with transcend to independently reading at home. Just like an athlete needs to practice before the big game, readers need practice before the big test!

I hope that these books will provide students with a love of reading.

When I was their age, I read because I loved to read. I sought out books that I was interested in through my public library and my school library. I hope that I can ignite this passion in my students. I truly believe that every student can love reading, they just need to find a book they love. When they enjoy what they are reading, it won't feel like work and that is my goal with this project.
