My students need 2 subscriptions of TIME for Kids magazines for differentiated reading levels, vocabulary practice cards, and 3 sets of Common Core reading task cards.
Where you learn should not affect whether you learn. As an inner-city school teacher, this is my classroom philosophy and I strive to instill this in my students each and every day. I am beginning my fourth year teaching at an inner-city school and every day my kids teach me something new.
My students attend a heavily populated school in a very urban city.
They all live in the surrounding community and for many of them, my classroom is the only safe and stable environment they know. My children are bright and eager to learn. In my classroom they are taught to explore, create, and discover new things every day. This year I will be teaching 5th grade reading and 6th grade math. I will be looping with these students, some for the third time, so they have truly become my children and we are a family.
My Project
We need more fiction and nonfiction reading comprehension materials to use during guided and independent reading time. Many of my students are well below their grade level in reading. Because of this, many of them become disengaged and unmotivated. It is my goal to see my students succeed. With the addition of task cards and magazines at their instructional level, my students will be given the opportunity to challenge themselves without frustrating them.
Students will be able to use reading task cards and magazine to help them practice their comprehension strategies. They can also use vocabulary books to engage in high-tier words they will come across in various texts. I will also be able to use many materials during guided reading in which students can practice reading and understanding at their individual reading level.
With the addition of these resources to my classroom, my students will be able to actively become engaged with different texts.
We have an hour of independent reading time daily in which students practice their reading strategies. With these books, my students will be able to advance in reading by developing their fluency as well as comprehension. Not only will my students' reading levels increase, but their motivation and self-esteem will as well.
