Learning to Love Reading, Hope in the 12th Grade Classroom
Help me give my students reading incentives! I am doing a book raffle each month for my students regardless of their grade in my class, help me get books they are interested in to their hands!
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
This year I will be teaching high school (9-12) English Language Arts and SAT/ACT/ASVAB Test Prep courses and an SEL class. I usually teach 18-28 students, though the classroom capacity is 30. I will additionally be sponsoring and leading an after-school fitness club for students, faculty, and staff who are interested in increasing their fitness and health levels. My school is a Title I school meaning all students receive free and reduced lunch and breakfast. My students have a wide variety of interests and reading comprehension levels as well as writing levels. I try very hard to make sure I scaffold my instruction to meet the needs of all of my students. My goal is to make my classroom a thriving community for my students.
My Project
My students will be able to participate in a book raffle each month. This allows them to become interested in reading, with different genres and book lengths available to accommodate the different preferences of my diverse classroom.
By holding a book raffle students will engage with writing from young adult authors (many of them African American like my students) and thus have representation in a mostly white, British focused 12th grade English classroom.
This allows students to discuss their reading, participate in class to earn raffle tickets, and to explore reading outside of the classroom.
