My Project

One of the most crushing things I can hear as a high school English teacher: "I hate reading." I hear this again and again from my students, among other refrains: "I USED to love reading in elementary and middle school, but not anymore"; "I don't have the time"; "Reading just doesn't interest me." I don't believe these students really hate reading anymore; I just think their love of reading has been beat out of them through dull assigned readings, outdated stories, or literature that doesn't reflect who these students are.

High school students deserve access to high-quality, high-interest novels that will reignite their love for reading.

My project aims to build a classroom library full of critically acclaimed and diverse young adult literature: graphic novels, sci-fi, fantasy, memoir, nonfiction, adventure, horror, you name it. I want to build a classroom environment that encourages choice, creativity, and above all, a love for reading. My students have endured enormous difficulty across the COVID-19 pandemic, but I know that reading can be healing, and my classroom is where it can begin.
