Learning to Love Literature

My 65 students need their own copies of "Lord of the Flies" to help them learn to annotate and interact with the text as they read.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

If you love to read, you know the smell of a new book and the sound of flipping through the crisp pages. I want to give my students the opportunity to experience the thrill of a new book and have the opportunity to learn how to truly interact with a text through annotating.

The students who these books will belong to are dedicated honors students at a comprehensive urban high school in California.

The school is very large, and these students are freshman, just beginning their high school journey. They are eager to learn and would greatly appreciate brand new books to call their own.

My Project

I'm requesting a single novel for each student in my two sections of freshman honors English. This will give students a chance to call a book their own; more importantly, it will give me the opportunity to teach students the valuable skill of annotating a text as they read. Students will be using this novel to apply all of the literary elements they learn throughout the year. We'll be annotating the novel for the elements that help convey a theme. Students will practice note taking, as well as striving to make connections to the text as they read, rather than after.

Annotation is an extremely valuable skill, and students are rarely given a text and told to write in it.

Students also need the opportunity to smell the fresh pages and crack the spine. This is what makes us fall in love with books and with reading. Please help me to help these students. They're amazing students who are eager to learn.
