My students need high interest books to get them hooked and the technology to share what they've read with their peers.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are brilliant and concerned citizens. They are poets and musicians, artists and politicians. They live and attend school in the heart of Chicago. Most of them will be the first generation of their families to attend college.
Unfortunately, they have had little exposure to books that reflect the world they see on a daily basis.
This has given them a distaste for books. Unless I can foster in them a love of reading, their dreams will be that much harder to achieve. Every year, when alumni come to visit and I ask them what was the biggest challenge in college, they all say the same thing -- the reading.
My Project
I created this project after realizing that my students struggle to read independently, mostly because they haven't been exposed to books they can relate to. For this project, I plan to start with a whole class novel, The Hate U Give, which I think will help strengthen student interest in learning, followed by independent reading novels that students will choose.
The Chromebooks will allow students to keep track of their reading progress, through the use of several free online programs.
Technology is very limited in our school and due to the independent nature of this project, we will need access to computers each day so that students can log their progress whenever they complete a book.
