Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I absolutely love teaching 2nd grade. The students start as kids just learning to read and leave loving reading. It is such a joy to match kids with the right books, books they can't put down and ask to read again and again. My students are especially motivated to read chapter books, much like the ones they see their older siblings reading. The trick is finding chapter books at their ability level. They get hooked on a series and are so proud!
My Project
Teaching 2nd grade in an urban public school is so rewarding. One of the best feelings in the world is seeing a child not only learn how to read with confidence but also to leave my classroom with a love of books. With the loss of reading specialists and librarians in my school district, I know I'll need to take on the role of getting the perfect book in the hands of each child. I've collected recommendations from kids and colleagues around the country and I can't wait to get this bookshelf and these beginning chapter books for my new group of eager readers!
