My Students

I teach English at an urban fine arts high school. My students are extremely creative and thrive on instruction that touches them artistically.

It's a wonder to walk down the steps and hear music emanating from one floor and the sounds of dancing from another.

As young, enthusiastic artists, my students are inspired by music, art, and drama which I incorporate in my English lessons regularly. Our class discussions are lively and insightful, especially when students bring their artistic backgrounds into the discussion.

My Project

I am very excited to attend the National Portrait Gallery's "Learning to Look" Summer Teacher Institute this July. The Institute will take place in the galleries of the National Portrait Gallery and other Smithsonian museums, and will focus on how to incorporate more portraiture into the classroom.

Since I teach at an arts school, I am constantly trying to incorporate more art, both visual and performance, into my English lessons.

The students connect so much more with literature when they can approach it through that lens. By attending this workshop, I will expand my ability to use art in the class and further engage my creative students. I know it will enrich my teaching.
