Help me give my students activity centers, resource boxes, and other materials for hands-on learning experiences and makes education exciting. Special needs students thrive on fun and action driven learning.
I have the pleasure of working in a separate special education classroom which consists of 6th, 7th and 8th graders. Currently, I have five students with a wide range of abilities from pre-K to 4th grade. I teach them Spelling, Reading, Writing, Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, Daily Living skills, Social skills, and about the community. We want our students to be excited about school. Adapting my lessons and differentiating for each student at their level is a must.
As an example, one of the activities we do to learn about the community is that we do a medical unit and study the human body and how to stay healthy.
We visit a hospital and practice first aid. After that we utilize the skills we learn by setting up a "medical clinic" We have a desk to check in and out and make co-pays. We have a waiting room and an exam room. We wear head to toe gear and scrubs and we treat everyone for whatever ails them. It gives them a hands-on experience, encourages interaction with the whole school and makes learning fun. Keeping learning alive requires a variety of materials and we learn by doing!
My Project
My students are absolutely wonderful. I teach a broad range of subjects and skills to students on many different levels. Teaching special needs students can be difficult sometimes because they need to learn in a variety of different ways and I need to use a variety of approaches, techniques and materials in order for them to be successful at learning new tasks. The cool and unique materials that I have requested from Lakeshore Learning will be very beneficial in helping my students reach their goals! Some of the materials I have asked for are measuring tapes, Science Cards, a consequences game, activities to learn about sorting and categories, math manipulatives, construct a letter activity and creating complete sentences activities. These products are awesome and my students deserve the best! We live to learn and learn to live.Thank You!!!
