Help me give my students the joys of learning ukelele this year. These ukeleles are a modest value, and I'm requesting a total of 20 since the classes that I see are from 14-26 students.
My students have a love for music and movement! These goofy kids have the desire to make and share music, laughing all the while. Every year, I'm met with students constantly asking the question, "What instruments will we get to play this year?" I'm so lucky that they are so eager and willing to dive into learning about instruments, as well as singing! There's even a group of students who regularly participate in our community theater, performing as much on the stage as possible.
Once, at a community theater production, we had a curtain call to "Old Time Rock n Roll" by Bob Seger.
The energy in the audience was great. The star of the show, one of my 4th-grade students, was doing all of the silly dances he could think of. When I saw him start running out of ideas, I decided to step next to him and say, "Do the Orange Justice! Five, six, seven, eight!" The crowd didn't stop laughing and cheering until the song was over. It was one of those times where we were synchronized perfectly, despite being a spur-of-the-moment decision. It was a great night for everyone.
My Project
My students are practically frothing at the mouth to have access to different kinds of instruments. Since our district is small, it's hard to get funding for large additions of instruments for the kids to play with. I'm determined, however, to find a way to get them access to a full set of 20 classroom ukeleles. I am working with some of my friends to make a wall-mounted rack so I will have a place to store them safely.
These ukeleles will give the students a taste of Hawaii, as well as gives most of them access to their first time ever playing string instruments!
We will be singing and playing all kinds of rad new music with these bad boys. Also, I recently purchased an amazing music curriculum called Quaver Music that includes an entire unit dedicated to ukeleles that I'm itching to explore with the students. With these ukeleles, we'll be hanging ten in no time. Kowabunga, dudes!
