Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students live in an urban area and they come to school every day because they want to grow, improve and make a better life for themselves and their families. This particular class is a Healthy Cooking class that student opt to join as part of our schools colloquium program. I have been running this popular program at my school for a number of years now, and it's great to see students become more adventurous eaters and learn to love healthier options!
My students, coming from busy, working households, want to learn more about culinary arts and how to cook healthy meals and snacks for themselves and their families.
My Project
Each week, students come excited to learn about new dishes they can prepare in class and later at home. They are always eager for this hands-on learning experience and each week they tell me how they tried out these skills at home and how well their families liked what they made. Using fresh ingredients, though, requires supplies such as cutting board and measuring cups.
I buy the majority of the ingredients we need from week to week with my own money, but having supplies such as these will help a lot in making the kitchen a better place to cook!
