Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students try to find their best path through their day. Their day presents an emotional roller-coaster: family interactions that may be one-sided and overbearing, intellectual concepts they may be too embarrassed to admit they don't know, friendships that are strained by unhealthy social coping habits.
Where can they find relief?
Where can they learn to understand what respectful interaction looks like? Where can they learn to cope through learning together? Our school is working to foster a loving spirit for their sake but we are rebuilding. At this time, my room has no workable resources.
My Project
My kids desperately need to learn to communicate: healthily, with respect, giving space for others to talk, to listen, to be understood. And the most direct entry into this kind of conversation happens through music. And the musical medium that matches my kids' energy with the expression of this kind of learning content is the DRUM CIRCLE!
I have accessory sticks, bells, etc, but the core of our "circle talk" is formed by the beat of these tunable, differently-pitched drums.
I do serve two schools with similar populations and needs. And both schools will be rebuilding their music program from an empty room. Please help us fill it with energy and the spark of hope!
