This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
What makes our students unique in this pre-kindergarten classroom is that they come to us with a blank slate and we fill their boards with academic knowledge. By the time they leave our classroom, they are writing on their own slates. We are a Title One facility nestled in an urban community that serves the children in the neighborhood. Considering that we are a Cleveland public school, our neighborhood has more crime and homicide than the city’s statistics. With these odds, our scholars are still on time and ready to learn.
My Project
My students will learn how to code with our awesome, little Bee Bot! My kids will be highly curious about this little black and yellow bug that moves based on their commands. The Bee Bot will be a universal tool I can use to foster critical thinking and will be accessible to every student in my class. My students will work cooperatively and individually to program paths. We can incorporate the Bee Bot into every subject! We can use the Bee Bot to find letter sounds on the carpet, hunt down shapes and even hunt down sums of addition problems. In short, programming can be taught alongside every subject in a super engaging and meaningful way!
Coding (or computer programming) is a new type of literacy!
To me, learning how to code complements naturally with the mind of four and five year old scholars. The Bee Bot will deeply engage my students and ignite their creative little minds while bringing STEM to life!
