I work with a variety of students both within the classroom setting, small group work and individual support. My primary goal is to support students social-emotional needs by teaching lessons within the classrooms, as well as providing students with de-escalation strategies when faced with overwhelming feelings during day-to-day experiences.
My office is a place for all students to find calmness and safety.
It is a place for them to learn and practice self-regulation so they are able to access learning with a clear and open mind. Students also learn strategies they can access within their classroom and learn to find acceptance, kindness and empathy through the social-emotional lessons taught. Please help to continue the growth of my students understanding of emotional regulation and the practice of many strategies within my office and within their classroom.
Reading books which focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) provide opportunities for children to learn and discuss social-emotional topics, such as turn-taking, cooperation, empathy, growth mindset, and kindness. When children participate in interactive SEL activities they experience social-emotional experiences in a facilitated, structured way. Asking children to label and explain the emotions of the characters in the story helps them learn a variety of emotions. Role playing social situations and regulation strategies helps to foster positive and healthy mental and physical growth in children which will benefit them in their adolescent and adult years.
Providing students with a relaxing, calm area promotes safeness and peacefulness in order for them to self-regulate through sensory input before bringing their attention back to academic work.
