I have been a Speech-Language Pathologist for 9 years and have worked in a variety of settings and schools. By far my favorite is the one I am in now, in an elementary school working with predominantly minority students in low socioeconomic households with a variety of needs. Their needs range from mild to severe, but one thing they all have in common is a desire to be happy. I work with many kids on the spectrum with very individualized plans based on their own social, emotional, and behavioral needs.
I am always trying to grow my practice and learn more on how to best support students with complex social/emotional and communication needs.
This year I work in three different classrooms where a majority of students are non-verbal, so I am trying to find alternate ways so that they can communicate and feel heard. I can help them learn appropriate social play skills, how to promote effective interactions with others, and a positive growth mindset. Some courses that I am particularly interested in that would really help me is Understanding and Teaching the Most Challenging Students by Nancy Rappaport, MD and Developing Communication and Literacy for AAC Users.
My Project
This years Special Education Conference would truly help me better serve my students. I work in three classrooms where most of my students are non-verbal with high sensory needs. A lot of the them experience great frustration because they feel their needs are not met or they are not heard.
I would love to grow my practice and find new ways to help my students feel seen, heard, and appreciated for all that they are.
The courses being offered works specifically to teach management of challenging behaviors and how to use alternative methods of communication.
