Have you ever wondered how our little ones learn the skills they will need to become successful adults? It all starts in Kindergarten, in the dramatic play center. There, the children have first hand experience using materials that they will work with when they get older. Some people feel that it is not important for children to "pretend" that they are adults. However, in our classroom, it is one way that children build appropriate vocabulary and learn what skills they will need when being a doctor, teacher, mother, father, construction worker, and many more.
I teach Kindergarten at Oak Grove Elementary School in Durham, NC. The children in my class are very diverse, not only in race, but also in ability and background. The majority of the students in my class recieve free or reduced lunch. We also have a few students with special needs and many who have never been exposed to learning at home. Many of their parents work odd hours and the children do not get this experience.
They also lack the resources to enjoy pretend play. This style of play is important in the development of our little ones. They learn to use their creativity, sharing, new language skills, and much more. It is such a joy to watch them interact with their peers in this center.
Also, our ESL (English as a Second Language) students pick up English quicker at this center. Their peers will give them the vocabulary they so desperatley need, and a place to practice using it.
We are asking for several dramatic play materials from Lakeshore Learning. These materials will give the children the opportunity to experience "grown up" life first hand. They are realistic, and some of them really work! The children will love to learn with these new materials. I wish I could express to you how important these materials are; however, the only way you will know is through the results that the children show. They will be well rounded students and the ESL students will gain much needed language skills.
Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal. I hope that you will join me in developing well rounded students who may one day become our future leaders. Thanks.
