Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach kindergarten age, 5-6 years old. My students come from many different backgrounds and learning needs. Whether that being their cultural, socio-economic background, challenges in learning, or stresses on the family. My students bring these things into the classroom and we build a community that is welcoming and understanding.
I want to develop a classroom library that focuses on social emotional learning.
It is important to me that I am creating an environment that students are able to develop skills to work within a classroom community.
My Project
The beginning of kindergarten is very difficult. I have to build a community in which students can learn to be kind, independent, and want to be at school. Many of my students have never been to pre-school, this is their first experience. I want them to be able to problem solve and think about their actions and how they might affect someone else.
The first day of school we begin by learning who we are and where we come from.
We build puzzle pieces with our families to hang in the classroom. This activity ignites our conversations about how we treat our families and what we expect of them. From there, we move on to learning about our community/team at school. We talk about how we are a family and we need to work together to be successful.
Once all of these discussions begin, I prefer other materials, such as books, to help the students understand kindness, problem solving, growth mindset, and empathy. These are all skills that will prepare them for their entire education.
