Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Teaching students how to communicate in two languages in a fun and engaging manner is what I love to do. This year I am teaching 18 rambunctious kindergartners English and Spanish. They are 18 kiddos with big hearts and a desire to learn. It has been a different kind of learning experience for them and a different kind of teaching experience for me, and I want to be able to provide the resources they need to support their learning.
Although many of my students are either homeless or come from low-income families, they are always happy and eager to learn.
They love singing songs, playing games, learning vocabulary, reading, and writing in both languages. Their parents are actively involved and some are becoming bilingual as well.
More than ever, my students need all the help and support that they can get to make remote learning as fun, motivating, and engaging as possible.
My Project
Books, physical books that students can touch, look through, read, is something that many of my students do not have. Coming from low income families and homelessness makes this difficult. Learning in a virtual setting during a pandemic makes it nearly impossible. I would love to be able to provide my students with books that they can keep and gain positive and useful knowledge from.
Providing my students with bilingual resources that will help build self-esteem and self-worth while teaching them to accept each other's differences will positively reinforce what I've been teaching them.
Please help me to purchase these books to not only provide students with books that they can add to their personal libraries but that will also stress that it's okay to be different and that acceptance of oneself and others is important.
