This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
We are a title one school with a mixture of African Americans, Latino, and Caucasian. My students are an energetic bunch and they are always on the move. They love learning new things although they all have communication handicaps. Some are non-verbal while others have limited speech. Most are autistic but all have issues with ADHD.
The children love looking at pictures of themselves, and most use alternative devices for speech.
They love taking pictures in the classroom with my phone. Photo time turns into a board meeting with everyone giving their input. It is amazing they turn into different little people. Big smiles; bright eyes-it's truly priceless.
My Project
They love taking pictures and can't wait to see snapshots taken on field trips. The photo time board meetings promote attempts at communication. My non-verbal students point and try to verbalize their views. On field trips into the community, we will be able to take many photos. This brings the field trip experience back to the classroom for further learning with everyone giving their input.
With our photos, we will be able to complete class projects which include photos.
We could include pictures of the plants and insects for our science and biology projects. We can also make our own photo library of objects and people in our environment that we want to learn more about. The children love learning through the lens because they realize there is a story in every picture.
