My students bring life to my classroom. They are all deaf or hard of hearing and they love coming to my classroom. When they enter the classroom they are not always motivated to get started on English. English does not come easy for a lot of my students. I try to bring books to my classroom that I believe my students will make a connection with the characters in the book.
My students usually start to open up about things in their life because of the books that they have read.
When they see that English is not the enemy, they become hungry for another book similar to what they have just read. The books helped them to grow. They start to ask questions and begin a dialogue among themselves about life.
My Project
My students struggle to understand what they are reading. I am a native American Sign Language (ASL) user. I help my students to make connections to the book by using ASL to create a bridge to the text in the book. I bring background information and then the book becomes meaningful to my students. The ones that already have experiences in life will make these connections.
Books have allowed several of my students to heal from their experiences in life.
My students begin to see that reading can be fun. They are able to think about the issues being addressed in the book and how they would behave in that situation.
