Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'm thrilled and excited to tell all of you about my wonderful, humble, and amazing students! These students have special needs with multiple disabilities and are non-verbal. They transition from the high school level to a transitional program which includes students within the ages of 18-22 years old. The goals of the program are to empower and educate students with basic life skills that they need in order to become independent young adults. These skills include; hygiene, cleaning, cooking, laundry, pre-vocational training, and community access/ awareness.
Many of my students come from low socioeconomic backgrounds with non English speaking parents and with limited knowledge about the world of special education which has limited the student and parent's ability to access resources.
Despite the many obstacles and difficulties these students encounter, they come to school with a smile on their face, ready, and eager to learn. They are curious about the world, people, and how they can contribute to society.
My Project
As a new teacher, I'm in need of arts and craft supplies for my students. With limited supplies, it's difficult to successfully do an art project when we need to. I want to be able to provide these materials for my students without having to worry where I will have to go to borrow them. I am asking for various types of art materials such as construction paper, color paints, paint brushes, glitter, etc. The materials will support the students' learning by allowing them to express their creativity and critical thinking through drawing and painting for our weekly reading from Unique and New-2-You curriculum. At the end of each reading topics in the curriculum, there are art and craft projects related to the reading that the students can do for addition support of the reading. In addition, we would also like to have a bingo game so the students can practice learning their numbers and a board basic skills to practice tying their shoes, bucket their belt, and button their pants and shirts.
Through art, my students will be able to express their wants and needs with people in a way that they won't be able to because of their disability.
They love and enjoy mixing the different types of colors, cut and paste, draw, and write on colorful papers. These activities are not only enjoyable and fun but it is also good for fine motor skills, hand eye coordination, emotions, and behaviors that many of the students are having difficulty with.
