My students need hands-on, interactive materials such as Osmos, accessories and an iPad to acquire basic math and language arts skills that are child-friendly and child directed.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am a Special Education Teacher working for Chicago Public Schools within an elementary school located on the Southwest side of Chicago. Over ninety-five percent of our student population are classified as low-income and receive free lunch. I am a Blended Preschool Special Education teacher which allows me to support Diverse Learners in a General Education Classroom (Team Teaching). I currently have fourteen scholars on my caseload which have diagnosis of Developmental Delays and/or Speech Impairments and Social-Emotional Disorders.
A large number (fifty percent) of the students that I service within the blended classroom (general education and diverse learners) are English Language Learners.
Both the Diverse Learners and English Language Learners benefit from a Multimodality (textual, aural, linguistic, spatial and visual resources) approach to learning.
I believe that every child is an individual that is capable of learning. Each child learns at his or her own pace. Teaching has always been my passion and I am honored to say that I am able to teach and give back to these students that reside in the same neighborhood in which I live.
“If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn.”
-Ignacio Estrada
My Project
The materials and supplies that I am requesting (Osmo, interactive games and an iPad) will support the diverse learners and English Language Learners in the blended preschool classroom. They will provide hands-on, interactive activities that are child-friendly and child-directed.
Through the implementation of technology (iPad and Osmo), students are exposed to content through a multimodal approach which is essential to students with different leaning styles and individualized learning.
I believe that it is important to provide students, especially diverse learners and English Learners, with forms of expressing their knowledge. With the support of technology, this goal can be accomplished!
