My Students
As a kindergarten teacher in a low income, high poverty school district, I get to spend my days with seventeen energetic, eager to learn five-year-olds who, despite the challenges they face, arrive at school optimistic and ready to take on the world.
My students are curious about the outside world but many have not have the opportunity to even leave this city.
Because of that I'd love to bring the world to them and help them expand their own worlds with new skills and learning adventures through the vast technologies available.
My Project
As technology dominates our lives, learning basic computer programming is an essential skill for children. Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. One of the challenges my students face is that most of them do not have access to the technology needed for early computer science instruction. My Kindergartners, pre- and emergent readers, will have the benefit of exposure to the elements of basic computer programming, i.e., counting, sequencing, estimating, cause and effect and left-to-right hand and eye coordination to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills, logic, creativity and perseverance. With the help of donorschoose.org, my students will use the requested iPad to explore computer science apps such as Tiggly as well as websites recommended by ed tech leaders; Hopscotch, Daisy the Dinosaur and Cargo-Bot. These resources will help my students develop important STEM skills alongside basic foundational skills.
