I work in a Title I school with students who come from a low socioeconomic background. Some of these students live in apartments while others live out of hotels. My school provides free breakfast to every student. We also offer free or reduced lunch to a majority of our students. In addition to this we have items that are free to take throughout the school and from the guidance counselor which includes backpacks, hats, gloves, coats, books, school supplies, canned and boxed goods to eat over the weekend, and so much more. These students need all the support and resources they can get. It is so important for me to instill a love of learning at a young age.
Due to the fact that my school is Title I, meaning most of our students come from low socioeconomic background and receive free breakfast and reduced lunch, we do not have a class set of laptops, iPads, or tablets. We have to schedule time in the computer lab to use technology and most of the time the computers are not working properly.
By having iPads in the classroom, it saves on transition time to the computer lab and provides a fun and engaging opportunity for students to play educational games during our literacy block.
I try to make my classroom a place where my students look forward to coming. I am hopeful that the integration of technology in my classroom would do just that!
