My students always come to school eager to learn. It’s why I love teaching kindergarten. The joy I see on their faces when they learn something new or solve a problem is the best feeling. Hearing their stories everyday and seeing their excitement while telling me those stories is what drives me.
Kindergarten can’t always focus on academics, socialization is just as, if not more important.
I don’t want my students to only learn how to read, write, and do math; I want them to learn how to get along with others and work through problems they may face. I want them to gain the skills they need to grow into good people (while also learning how to read).
My Project
Kindergarten isn’t only about academics. Some of the best lessons come from free play. Students at this age need to learn to solve problems, get along with others, accept loss, share, and take turns.
We do this through games and free play.
Unfortunately, it is the teacher’s responsibility to provide the games and toys for these learning opportunities. When I started teaching eight years ago, most of my items were donated to me from family or teachers I knew, or I purchased from garage sales. The boxes are falling apart, pieces are missing. Each year more legos go missing. It would be a wonderful thing to be able to give these students some new games and play centers this year.
