Learning Through Playing

My Students

Over 80% of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds. Many of these children don't have access to the selection of reading materials that children from more affluent families take for granted.

Our children have a great hunger for knowledge, but often lack the materials to fulfill this appetite.

Our school is a neighborhood school in a small New England city. There is a strong sense of community here between parents, staff, and residents that truly makes a difference in the school experience.

My Project

Play allows children to use their imagination and creativity, interact with their peers and is important to healthy brain development. While we LOVE to enjoy playtime outside as much as possible, living in New England does not always allow this to happen. During those cold winter months, my students are stuck indoors for most, if not all of the day. They look forward to playtime before going home as a way to unwind from their learning-filled day. These toys will allow my students to have choice as to what they want to play with; and the colorful bins will make these toys easily accessible for the students.

Meaningful playtime helps improves socialization, problem solving skills, and language among many other things.

All kindergartners should have the opportunity in their day to separate from their learning and enjoy some play; and this project will help to make this happen!
