Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Learning or school is suppose to be fun. The institution of school for young children as early as kindergarten are expected to perform on tests. Play is not apparent in the classroom as it once was. And yet, play is considered the most effective way a child can learn.
My students are consisted of transitional kindergarten and regular kindergarten kids whose primary language is not English.
Our elementary school is located in a low socioeconomic neighborhood surrounded by low performing schools. Even though our school is underprivileged, our students' enthusiastic attitude toward learning is most apparent. Therefore, this group of learners deserves to have more materials accessible to foster their language development and social competency.
My Project
When teachers allow students to purposely "play," their comfort level is at its peak, and more learning takes place when stress is at its lowest. While students are actively engaged (having fun) playing with a variety of manipulative such as play food, utensils, pots, pans, and animal replicas will enhance vocabulary development and social interactions. During "play time," students tend to be at ease and naturally have more oral discourse with peers. As a result, their oral language and social skills will automatically increase. Then, they will become fluent speakers and have more social competency to succeed and even excel in society.
We can make learning fun by allowing purposeful play to occur in the class setting.
Learning can take place when there is an interaction with people, objects, animals, and even toys as our students may call it. So, why not give educational toys to foster learning?
