This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Excellence is not being the best, it is doing your best!" This is the mantra of our room. We begin our day with a handshake, a "good morning," and sharing "Good Things" with the class. As a class, we hold ourselves to a high standard, because we are simply the best group of kindergartners and first graders!
Our room consists of 14 energetic five and six olds who love Guided Reading, brain breaks with GoNoodle, striving to become the "Black Panther" of the class, and rapping along to Flocabulary.
My Project
Every class that I have taught, my students always want to create, build, or color. But in the age of testing and other requirements, simple "play" is often pushed aside. In my classroom, I try to set time each day for my students to "play." Studies show that children implement and utilize social skills when playing versus just being taught said skills.
Learning through play is essential for any child's development!
I have requested a bubbles kit, drawing paper, and stamp kits so my students can create, problem solve, and practicing social skills, such as: sharing, problem solving, and working in a group. Many times we focus only on reading, writing, and math, but it is also important to help teach and lead young minds to be aware of others and themselves while practicing social skills.
