My students need toys such as the Learning Resources Pretend & Play Animal Hospital and book activity sets like the Lakeshore Storytelling Kits to increase their language and play skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are special education preschoolers in an urban preschool center. These children all have language impairments, and many have not yet learned to talk. Most of the children I work with are in small classrooms where they can get more small group and individualized instruction to address their weaknesses. I provide speech therapy in the classroom to increase their communication skills during natural classroom activities. The preschool curriculum has monthly themes on which we base our activities. I am hoping to receive toys and materials that will help me to increase the children's learning and communication as part of these thematic units.
My Project
Children can learn so much through play, and language is so naturally a part of play. Therefore, I love to work on developing language skills through fun play activities. It is even better if the play activities that the children are engaged in are related to the classroom curriculum. That is why I have chosen themed play sets such as the Pretend & Play Work Belt & Tool Set and the Learning Resources Pretend & Play Animal Hospital. I will use these to teach the children vocabulary about the thematic unit and to encourage more communication.
Another fantastic way to increase language skills for preschool children is using book sets that have pictures/manipulatives to go with them, such as Lakeshore Storytelling Kits - Set 2.
Having pictures and manipulatives keeps the children engaged and provides opportunities for additional learning activities to go along with the book.
With these materials, I can impact so many preschool children and work on increasing their language skills in ways that are fun and engaging!
