I am a kindergarten teacher at an elementary school in San Francisco's Chinatown district. My students are energetic 5-year-olds who are second language learners, learning English as their second language. The majority of my students live in 1 room apartments or studios and lack space and resources.
I would like to provide my students with an environment that fosters and develops their social and communication skills which they lack. Since they live in crowded conditions, they have to be quiet so they do not disturb other family members or their neighbors. Five year-olds need opportunities to play and express themselves freely, so they can develop and learn how to talk to others and play with others appropriately. The classroom is a place where my students feel comfortable in expressing themselves and moving freely without worrying about disturbing others. It is also a place where my students have a chance to learn how to interact with other children their own age.
Having the necessary manipulatives will provide my students opportunities to explore freely and to learn communication and social skills. The materials I am requesting are dramatic play manipulatives, building manipulatives and puzzles.
Each year I have 20 students. These manipulatives will last many years and help many little 5 year-olds develop their communication and social skills.
