I teach music in an elementary school of about seven hundred fifty students. I have a great online curriculum but I am always trying to find other ways for students to experience music through the use of various tools. Some such tools are anything from sheet music that they can actually hold in their hands, to various instruments. These things are vitally important. While technology is great, our students today also need to experience the joy of creating music together "offline"!
I am very grateful for the opportunity to provide experiences for my students that otherwise would go unexplored if not for the generosity of people that share in the love of the arts.
Funding in public schools for the arts is very little. I would love to be able to take my chorus on various trips for them to be able to perform and show off their hard work for the community, but buses and uniforms and other expenses can get in the way of such experiences.
My Project
We will use this requested Pirates! The Musical Performance Kit to produce a musical that will enhance school community. The kit is for a 35-minute musical that features six original songs, choreography, a helpful production guide, and a script with speaking parts that can easily be adapted to different cast sizes and abilities.
The musical will help with social and emotional learning by having students come together and create something that they must work as a team to accomplish.
Musicals are a great way to bring a community closer together and help create parent and community involvement. This would provide an opportunity for many students directly, but could potentially touch the lives of so many more who came to see the show!
This specific musical will be used to jump start a program at our school that has fallen victim to lack of volunteers, and I am planning on re-energizing the drama program at our elementary school!
