Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a teacher of 28 years, but have moved down from fifth to third grade. I have been overjoyed to work with this caring, loving, and enthusiastic group of students. Their backgrounds and abilities vary widely. We are a K-8 school where community is taught and instilled in all grade levels.
Third graders possess a magical fascination with all possibilities, and they are eager to succeed and take chances.
My students have the natural love of learning about the world, sharing ideas, and gathering knowledge.
Over half of my students are performing below grade level, and struggle with ADD, ADHD, grief, and learning disabilities. Many come to school with worries and anxiety, and many struggle to fit in. The classroom is where they come to embrace learning. I want all my students to feel welcome and accepted in our classroom.
My Project
My students are in love with the Osmo learning games, and each waits anxiously to have a turn. We currently have 4 Osmo kits that are used in a learning station. Even with students working in teams of 2, it still only allows for 8 students at a time. We would love to increase our Osmo learning games by adding two bases, Coding Awbie and Detective Agency.
While students enjoy using computers, Osmo games and activities include a component that engages students further than a traditional computer game.
It has moveable pieces that children manipulate to interact with the tablet, furthering their interest and eagerness to participate. These requested Osmo kits will teach my kids about coding, math, language, geography, spatial awareness, and critical thinking.
While my students work in pairs, they are able to increase their ability to communicate problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Students are learning from each other while getting the satisfaction of reaching increasingly more difficult goals set by each level of the Osmo activities.
