Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 6th graders are brilliant, empathetic, and enthusiastic learners. We are a Title I school, with all students qualifying for free lunch. The majority of our population is of Hispanic origin. My students have just begun discovering grade level novels and are ecstatic to learn more.

My Project

The novel "I am Malala" will immerse the students in a culture that they know very little about. Through the experiences of Malala, students will learn about gender equality and the importance of fighting for your rights. The novel "The Giver" will provide students with the thought of a utopian society in which everything is the same. This will allow for opportunities for students to think deeply about everyday situations.

Through the use of these novels, students will learn vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, writing, note taking, and reading skills, by being immersed in a book.

The high interest rates of these novels will allow for excitement and curiosity of reading. Students will learn by being exposed to a book, rather than reading excepts.
