Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is a Title One school with 94% of the student population coming from low income homes and almost 70% of our students are second language learners. The students in our reading program need direct and explicit instruction to help them learn how to break the “code” of letters and sounds.
My students are energetic and eager to learn!
My students have often struggled in school and I have told them that my job is to give them work that will engage them in learning in the most understandable way.
My Project
In order to teach my students how to read I will be creating magnetic letter boards. Each student will have a magnetic letter board to manipulate. We will use our new boards for both reading and spelling. Research shows that learning pathways are opened in the brain when students use multi-sensory learning methods.
We will use our new magnetic letter boards to make connections between sounds and the letters that represent those sounds.
We will then work on building one syllable words. As the students progress we will begin to use the small magnetic boards to build and break apart multi-syllable words.
I have created my first few magnetic boards and letters to share with my students, but they are excited to each have their own letter set!
