Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember what you learned in your first high school English class? In an effort to make sure my kids remember, I like to use texts that include historical references, and also relate to our theme of decisions and consequences. The books I am requesting will definitely keep their attention.
I actually teach two diverse populations of students.
I work in an inner city high school in New York. I teach day classes, which consist of students who are just starting their high school experience. I also teach night classes in the same building, and these students are over age and under credited. Both groups of students that I work with are at-risk youth, and I use various fictional texts to try to reach them.
My Project
Through the use of various fictional texts, students have been able to stay focused on the novel, as well as the non-fiction information that I incorporate with the discussions. This is just because of the fact that the novel is of such high interest. Their interest helps me assist the students in focusing on our theme, as well as getting them to analyze and evaluate the historical contexts of such texts. We are able to have elaborate discussions about making decisions, looking at the consequences, and then the students can relate the discussion (and novels) to their own lives. In addition, the historical context helps prepare the students for their standardized tests. I also include our history teachers in on our discussions, so they come into our classroom to give presentations so that everything has a connection for the students. "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian" and "Animal Farm" are the types of books my students will absolutely enjoy reading and learning about.
My goal in life is to be the best teacher that I can be in order to assist my students in being the best that they can be.
This donation is crucial to that goal because, with these materials, my classes will be able to get a rich educational experience, one that I really believe will be memorable for them. My students like to have conversations about what they are learning with each other and even staff members. I know they will want to share what they have learned in these two books.
