My first-grade students come from the northwest side of Chicago and many are from low-income backgrounds. For many students, learning resources are limited and school may be one of the only places that they encounter opportunities that challenge their critical thinking skills.
First grade is a special year in a child's life where imagination, creativity, and a passion for learning can be fostered.
It is an exciting time where students discover different cultures, time periods, ecosystems, and much more. Your support can help transform their learning experience into one they will never forget!
My Project
In first grade, students grow tremendously in reading through independently reading and listening to read aloud stories. In a reading and writing unit, we specifically focus on the non-fiction genre. They write their own non-fiction stories and these books can serve as models of example writing for them. It is often difficult to find engaging non-fiction literature that is at the appropriate level for first grade students.
In addition, during our Social Emotional lessons, we often discuss about kindness and compassion.
These read aloud books that focus on these topics will be sources of lessons and discussion for our class.
