Learning Through Literature - With Books About STEM

Help me give my students the non-fiction books necessary to increase their knowledge of the scientific and mathematical world around them. I am hoping this will help increase their engagement in the world of STEM.

My Students

I teach at a school with a great mixture of ethnicities, cultures, and income levels. This broad spectrum of backgrounds allows for great opportunities to group low performing students with high performing students, to encourage peer tutoring, and to develop relationships outside the students' typical social groups. The school is one of the first schools in our city, located downtown, which brings in students from several close neighborhoods... government housing all the way up to downtown condos and walk ups, as well as housing in the historic district. This diversity makes us a very unique school in our area.

My Project

Non-fiction books are usually the last to be checked out by students in my classroom and our school libraries. Kids want to read short books with pictures and stories they can relate to. After researching a local book store, I found many engaging titles that the kids will fall in love with. The stories are child-friendly while teaching them important science and mathematics skills at the same time.

I am requesting 50 books that deal specifically with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics to help my students learn important skills and how they relate to the world around them.

This will help close the achievement gap for students who have not had the opportunity to engage in computer science, and who do not see the importance of math and science in the real world. The books will make a wonderful addition to a very fiction filled classroom library.
