Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are my inspiration. My kindergarten classroom consists of 25 children from all different backgrounds. I have a large percent of beginner English language learners. The rest of my class consists of students with special needs and general education students.
More importantly my students are funny, energetic, creative, frustrated, shy, silly, curious, but most of all resilient.
All the diversity makes for a great teaching experience, but it also makes it difficult to meet the various needs of the students in my classroom.
Every morning I start fresh and do my best to reach the needs, whatever they may be, of each child. My school has a very large population of low, socio-economic students. My school is a Title I school. Many of the children live in shelters and live in large multi-generational households. It would be awesome to give all these children the opportunity to meet their optimal potential.
My Project
As a kindergarten teacher I understand the importance of developing a child's oral language skills. A listening center that includes a mobile wooden stand and a CD and cassette player, can meet this need.
Children love to read their favorite story books daily.
This listening center will allow my students to read their favorite story books independently. Children learn best through repetition. This center will let the children reread their books and reinforce their understanding of story structure and master print concepts.
The mobile wooden stand will allow the children to set up their own center and keep their books and CDs organized, another important kindergarten skill that must be introduced.
