My classroom is full of students who are working on social and life skills. These students have the desire to be a part of the community but have little or no experience interacting in the work field.
I am the Special Education teacher for a charter school in the Salt Lake School District.
Our school has a high focus on helping students attend college, but many of my students will join the work force after high school. Most of my students do not have any experience in the work field and have a difficult time with social interactions. My students are hard-working, fun-loving kids who are trying to gain the skills that will help them once they graduate.
My Project
My students will use the audio books and the MP3 players to listen to the books that are assigned to them for Language Arts. They will read along as they listen to help them develop reading strategies as well as increase their comprehension. The books will be available for the students to put on the classroom MP3 players, which will be available for the students to check out and take home.
The students in my room have specific learning disabilities that make reading large amounts seem like an insurmountable task.
These audio books will help the students build a love of reading and learning as they are exposed to literature that has been chosen specifically to me meaningful and of interest to my students.
