Help me give my students the ability to learn through play and build language skills. With these items (pretend washing machine, pretend grocery store, etc.) and toys, my students will build vocabulary and work on social/emotional skills daily.
Pre-k is the place where the love of learning begins. As a varying exceptionalities classroom, students enter the classroom with all different levels of abilities. While many choose to see what these students are incapable of, I choose to see what they are capable of. I service many students who are non-verbal, as well as students who have other special needs. All of the students in my classroom have a language delay. This means that these students are behind in their language development when compared to a typical child their age. While they may struggle with communication, they have stolen my heart. The warm hugs, smiles, and laughter are more than any words could ever say. I know where they are now, and I have so much hope for where they can go from here!
My Project
Our school is a low performing school. In fact, we have been rated a D school for two years in a row. Many of my students come from underprivileged homes. Some do not have pretend play items at home, while others have no adult to play with to develop the crucial social and language skills In our dramatic play center, the theme changes biweekly. It goes from a pretend grocery store, to a pizzeria, to a rocket ship. This is something the students love, and spend most of their center time in.
With the items in my project, my varying exceptionalities students will learn to interact with peers, build vocabulary, and learn to love school.
