I have the privilege of working with 105 motivated, bright students. My students have diverse cultural backgrounds, and many speak at least one other language fluently. Eighty of the students have elected to take Advanced Placement (AP) Environmental Science, and the other twenty-five are in general Environmental Science. Many plan on attending college after graduation, and are trying to determine what they are passionate about.
Environmental science is one of the most important courses for students to take, as it relates directly to their choices and their impact on the Earth.
Many of my students had no idea what environmental science was when they signed up, and the first few weeks have been truly eye-opening for both them and myself.
My students are active in school and their communities, and many have part-time jobs, or additional responsibilities at home. They are highly motivated and have the drive to succeed.
My Project
My students are eager to learn, and learn best when they are doing real science. A major component of AP Environmental Science is lab work, and these supplies are essential. I plan to do labs at least once every two weeks, but the cost of the materials can be a limiting factor. Your support will help me to provide authentic learning experiences to my students.
These lab supplies will enable my students to do the work that environmental scientists do in the field.
Through the soil test kits, students will be able to measure different soil parameters (including Nitrogen & Phosphorous), which will help them understand nutrient cycles. The pH probes will enable students to measure the pH values of different solutions, and to learn about the effects of ocean acidification. The dendrology kit will help students learn how to calculate the age of a tree, and push them to think about environmental issues that may affect the growth of the trees. Through owl pellet dissections, students will learn about different trophic levels and the relationships that exist in ecosystems.
