This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Our program is called Preschool Education Program located in a Title I elementary school. Our program teaches students with various disabilities ages 3-5. The majority of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch. In addition to economic challenges, my students require additional supports to learn to sit, follow directions, walk in the hallway, imitate actions, begin to communicate, learn the alphabet, and learn to count, sort, and identify numerals. Our program is for five hours per day, five days a week. Our students are a diverse group. English is the second language for some. We have students who are completely non verbal or are in the beginning stages of learning to communication.
My Project
Manipulatives are hands-on tools for teaching math and language arts at the preschool level. Children learn in various ways. There are seven learning styles: Visual (spatial), Aural (auditory-musical), Verbal (linguistic), Physical (kinesthetic), Social (interpersonal), Solitary (intrapersonal), Hands on learning with manipulatives help children to access the curriculum. In addition hands on learning with manipulatives helps students with special needs, as well as those whose first language is not English. The manipulatives selected for my project are Shape Discovery Boxes, Giant Lacing Shapes, Button Size Sorting, Lakeshore Manipulatives, Peg Pictures for Beginners, Peg Number Boards, Lakeshore Counting Cones will help guide my students with objectives focused on counting to 5, then to 10; sorting by color, shape, size; as well as opportunities for modeling & repetition through play.
Learning should be exciting and fun at the preschool level.
When provided with new and engaging manipulatives and fine motor tools, our students will become excited and have a desire to engage and learn. Help me to provide this opportunity for my students to engage with hands on materials.
