My Students

My school is in a suburban area of Florida. Quite a few of the students come from families that struggle to provide basic school supplies. Many of these children live in apartments and have limited access to the experience of growing and cultivating their own fruits and vegetables.

The first grade consists of about 75 students that would be thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in a hands-on learning experience.

I am creating this project in hopes of instilling a lifelong love of gardening!

My Project

In first grade, part of our science curriculum is life cycles of plants. The students learn about the needs of living things, the process of the life cycle of a plant through hands-on activities, and the care and maintenance of a vegetable garden. We have 6 raised garden beds that are loved and cared for by our students.

These gardens are in desperate need of maintenance, the wood is rotting and the beds are falling apart.

The new garden beds will allow our students to continue to plant for many years to come.

The students are so interested in tending the gardens that they often give up their recess time to weed, water, and plant. We do not have the resources to replace the gardens and would hate to abandon what has dramatically improved our science curriculum and the lifelong love of gardening.
