My students need educational games, hands-on items, such as manipulatives, to improve reading and phonics skills, and supplemental activities to improve comprehension skills.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students in my classroom struggle with traditional ways of learning. They are behind educationally, and require a great deal of repetition in learning and learn through various methods. Having hands on games and learning materials would be beneficial because when students have fun, they learn!!!
My students attend an urban public school and each student receives free breakfast/lunch and textbooks.
Many of our students receive clothing and shoe assistance, and will receive assistance during the holidays so that they can celebrate with their families. Our school is a Title 1 school as well. There are a variety of learners within my classroom, and what they lack in resources, they make up for with heart and determination to be successful. Many of these students don't have access to games and hands on learning activities at home, and I would like to provide them the ability to learn through fun hands on experiences in the classroom. Having these tools would allow them to explore education through a variety of ways and the variety of activities would reinforce what students have already learned through practice and repetition. A new outlook could instill a love for learning for those who struggle with traditional ways of learning.
With these resources, my students will have a hands on approach to reading fluency and comprehension skills. In order to improve fluency, a student needs to learn phonics and basic reading skills, and with a variety of approaches (games, hands on activities, etc) they will not only receive the traditional approach, but receive repetition through fun activities. My students are behind several grade levels academically, and it is my goal to increase their reading instructional levels each year so they can be successful in the general education classroom. Some of my students are essentially non-readers, so allowing them the opportunity to learn through fun activities will give them a confidence boost and enhance their education.
Having various hands on approaches can change the life of a child with special needs.
These students learn through all modalities, and the traditional classroom approach does not always work for them. Games and other activities enhance every aspect of learning, from hands on to visual. Students learn when they are having fun, and and these items could open up their eyes to make learning exciting. This will motivate students to participate and will allow them to enjoy learning each day!
