Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a dual language school that serves a large number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunch as well as a large number of English language learners (ELLs). More specifically, 77% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch and 53% of our students are considered ELLs. Despite these statistics, our school has been recognized as an effective school by the National Center for Urban School Transformation (NCUST). In addition, we were also recognized as a Gold Ribbon School by the state of California. We are a an effective school because we have a rigorous curriculum and high expectations for each of our students.
In my classroom students are immersed in two languages while learning Science, Social Studies, and Math.
I balance the high expectations and rigorous curriculum with activities such as meditation. My students love learning but they also love having fun!
My Project
I teach at a school where we have a rigorous curriculum and high expectations for all of our students. In addition, we expect our students to master two languages. Our students are constantly working hard and delving into rigorous assignments.
As a third grade teacher I strive to make learning fun and engaging for my students.
For instance, we practice meditation in order to help us be more aware of our bodies and also as a way to practice mindfulness. I recently learned about the benefits of a flexible classroom environment and would love to provide my students with the opportunity to further their learning through fun seating. A flexible seating classroom environment will allow my students to learn while having the autonomy to select the learning option that works best for their learning needs. My students will be able to select whether they want to use yoga balls, wobble cushions, wobble chairs, or traditional chairs to support their learning. As research shows the classroom environment plays a critical role in the learning and well being of students. With your support I will be able to continue making learning a productive yet fun experience for my 3rd graders.
