Learning Through Enrique's Journey: A True Immigrant Story
Help me give my students access to an engaging core text for our nonfiction, immigration unit! I am requesting 75 copies of the book Enrique's Journey to provide class copies for over 300 students!
I teach 7th-grade reading and reading intervention. My students are so unique and intelligent! We are lucky to have such diversity in our school and our staff strives to use our cultural diversity to drive culturally relevant instruction.
Our school serves a 60% low-income student body which undoubtedly affects the way we teach our awesome students.
Because of our students' financial shortcomings, we often see them coming to school without the proper resources to be successful middle school students.
Our students are not only racially and financially diverse, but they are also VERY intellectually diverse. I teach students who read as low as a 3rd-grade reading level and as high as a 12th-grade reading level. This range in reading ability creates many challenges for my self-funded library to accommodate.
My Project
I am requesting 75 copies of the young adult adaptation of the nonfiction text, Enrique's Journey by Sonia Nazario. This text will be used in two different classrooms and will service over 300 students during this school year alone! Our 4th and final unit of the school year is a nonfiction study on immigration. I am so excited to dive into this unique and relevant topic with students and know their learning will be made better with access to an engaging and relatable core text.
One of the most essential strategies in teaching young adults is a connection to their own lives and I strive to provide core texts, such as Enrique's Journey, that will do just that.
I know that students will be able to connect their own feelings and emotions to the main character of this story, Enrique, who is similar in age to them.
Please consider donating so that I can provide my students with the most engaging and informative nonfiction unit possible! I can already imagine that insightful, meaningful, and unique instruction opportunities that this book would provide!
